Sigma continues as main sponsor of Special Olympics Sweden

Sigma Group is to renew its commitment as main sponsor to Special Olympics Sweden, thereby continuing to make visible and increase interest in sports for people with intellectual disabilities.

Sigma's commitment to Special Olympics Sweden began in 2019 with the Funkisfonden initiative. The following year, it became the main sponsor of Special Olympics Sweden and national sponsor of Parasport Sweden.

This sponsorship has made it possible to continue the work with Special Olympics School Days – the popular sports days in special schools – which has resulted in more people with intellectual disabilities discovering the joy of movement and joining a sports club.

Sigma has also shown great commitment to the Special Olympics Games and made a significant contribution to the national games in Malmö becoming a success story last summer by, among other things, providing volunteers, participating in the visitor program and helping to market the event.

Next up is participation in the world's largest sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities – the Special Olympics World Games. The games will be held in Berlin from 17-25 June and Sigma will be there to cheer on the Swedish team.

“The fact that Sigma continues to commit to the Special Olympics and sports for people with intellectual disabilities means a lot. We are currently on a development journey where we want to further expand the concept and grow even more, among other things by starting up the Family Program which offers activities to involve relatives of the athletes. We are happy that Sigma wants to join us on this journey, and they will be an important piece of the puzzle going forward,” says Linnéa Björndahl, responsible for Special Olympics Sweden.

“We want to be a part of this, and support the work of Special Olympics, to get more young people moving and physically active, regardless of their situation. We believe that having the opportunity to find your sport is an important key. And if we can get out into the schools and give more people that opportunity via School Days, we believe that more children and young people can get moving and get involved in a sports club. In addition to physical activity, the sports clubs offer a social context and the chance for new friendships, which is incredibly important for young people's well-being and personal development,” says Johan Glennmo, Chairman of Danir AB (Owner of Sigma Group).

“We believe that building role models within the context of Special Olympics is an important factor which will help more children and young people with intellectual disabilities to see that sport is an opportunity for them. And that physical activity has a positive effect on their well-being,” Johan continues.

The extended agreement runs until April 2024.
